Your Puppy's New Home:
Buying a new puppy is an exciting time. However, the adjustment time can also be a scary experience for your new puppy. Your puppy will be taken away from his/her mother and siblings and may feel insecure or unsure of a new environment. During this time, your new puppy may display physical and vocal reactions - in the first couple of days or first week (eg. crying through the night and diarrhoea from nervousness). However, you can help your new puppy adjust to his/her new home by making him/her feel as welcome as possible.

Question:
Toilet Training?
Answer:
I recommend Positive Reinforcement (reward with a treat when your puppy does right) when toilet training your puppy. Take your puppy outside immediately after feeding - to help establish toilet training and praise him/her when appropriate. Puppies naturally do not like to go to the toilet in their bed or near their meal area. So, setting up familiar areas for these tasks will help you. Toilet Training is best to be established after your new puppy has been introduced to his/her new environment. Because, it takes time for a new puppy to get familiar with his/her new environment and learn toilet training.

Question:

Traveling in the Car?
Answer:

Regarding travel, I would recommend that your puppy travel in a 'Pet Carry Crate' for safety, with a small towel or blanket inside. A carry crate is a hard object, so be sure to secure a seat belt through the crate handle for the safety of you and your puppy while travelling in the car. If your crate has a removable base inside, you could put some paper towel inside (under the removable base) to prevent any spills in your car. If your crate does not have a removable base then you may like to line the crate with newspaper and place an extra towel or picnic blanket on the car seat, under the crate. Letting your puppy have a break to go to the toilet during your travel would be a good idea. However, I highly recommend that you purchase a small collar and lead to prevent your puppy from running off at any rest area. If you are travelling a long distance, I would recommend that you have some bottled water and an ice cream container for your puppy to drink from at your rest area/s.

Question:

Car Sickness?
Answer:
It is likely that your puppy will experience car sickness when traveling to his/her new home. Diarrhoea and vomiting may occur after or during travel. Regular stops at rest ares can help during long distance travelling in the car.

Question:
Vet Check, Microchip and Vaccination?
Answer:
Vaccination: Your new puppy will have already received his/her first vaccination before leaving LoyalRetreat. You will receive a Vaccination record/certificate that you will need to take with you to your local vet for the next vaccination. The next due date is on your puppy's vaccination certificate. Vaccinations are very important to protect your new puppy from diseases. It is important to ensure that your puppy is up-to-date with all future vaccinations.
Microchip: If you have brought your puppy from a registered breeder in NSW, your puppy should have also received a microchip for identity and legal purposes. At LoyalRetreat a puppy's microchip number paper work is included in a puppy pack and we transfer the microchip number into a new puppy owner's name after purchase. You must however register your puppy with your local council.

Before being sold, every LoyalRetreat puppy is vaccinated, microchipped, health checked and his/her weight is measured by our local vet. Puppies can not be vaccinated and receive a microchip unless they are in good health. When you purchase your puppy you will receive the Vaccination Certificate and Microchip details in your puppy pack. Our vet recommends that, protection after vaccination may take up to 2 weeks (for the Vaccination to work) so isolation of puppies from other dogs and public environments is essential.
It is important to Keep pups away from other dogs feces!

Question:

Worming?
Answer:
Your pup has been wormed regularly up to departing LoyalRetreat. However, you will need to continue with a worming treatment after taking your new puppy home. When you take your puppy for a vet check you should also ask your vet which worming treatment would be best for your puppy, including Heart worm. different options available. eg. LoyalRetreat Labradors are on a strict monthly dose of Heart Worm + Intestinal All-Wormer.
Be cautious that some supermarket worming tablets do not include the Vital 'Heart wormer'.

Desexing is usually done before six months old and there are many advantages to desexing your puppy (please speak to your vet for further information).

Question:

Exercise?
Answer:

Puppies bones and joints can be easily damaged when they are exposed to unnecessary or forced exercise. Puppies should not share a kennel or yard with a larger dog/s.  Puppies are very active and need no more exercise than they create for themselves in their own environment.

Puppies should not be taken on long walks, runs on the lead or be allowed to play on staircases, while they are growing [first 12 months] - as this may cause hip or health problems later in life.

Question:

Socialising Your Puppy?
 Answer:

We recommend that you enroll your puppy in Puppy Pre-School to help build valuable socialising skills. Social skills are very important and should begin before your puppy turns six months old. Socialising your puppy in a puppy pre-school environment may also produce obedience skills that lead to a very happy dog and owner/s, later in life.

Question:
Feeding Your Puppy?

Answer:

Question:

Answer:

We recommend keeping to the same diet as your puppy was on before leaving LoyalRetreat, at least for the first month. Your FREE Puppy Pack will include some items to get you started. It is important not to over feed a labrador as overfeeding may cause health problems later on in life. Remove any left over food from puppy's bowl within 20 minutes after eating. As your puppy matures your vet may advise of a different diet.

I heard that some foods are poisonous to dogs, is this true?

Yes, some foods I know are poisonous (and some can cause death) to dogs are; chocolate, onion, beetroot, rhubarb, mushrooms, spinach, avocado, pork products. Also a dog should never be fed cooked bones as they can splinter causing internal damage and health problems.
